Entrepreneur Peter Jones calls on ‘heroes of procurement’

Peter Jones, entrepreneur and star of BBC TV show Dragons’ Den, says the ‘heroes of procurement’ should make themselves known and inspire young people.

Jones, who has also set up a series of enterprise academies for business-minded teenagers, told SM students liked hearing from businessmen and women with the best life stories to tell.

“Our students love these honest master classes because they are inspirational and personal.

“I would encourage the heroes of procurement to make themselves known and get out there and meet more young people. Tell them, through honest personal accounts, what it means to procure services for amazing things like, for example, London 2012 – that’s a great way to make the story of procurement ‘sticky’ and engaging in my opinion.”

CIPS has teamed up with the Peter Jones Enterprise Academies to get teenagers interested in the profession. It ran the CIPS ‘negotiation challenge’, a two-stage competition between teams of 16 to 18-year-old students from the academies, assisted by CIPS members. Professionals observing were very impressed with their results. See the July issue of SM for full details.
